Peter Greier

Peter Greier - ...Eat This - 2009 - DrumTex

The new CD from the Austrian Guitarist Peter Greier, guitar music not just for guitarists and brilliant composition spiced with excellent playing. Between rocking fusion and catchy tunes and some jazz flavour now and then. Featuring Alex Machacek playing a Solo on "Hendi" and the Austrian Popidol winner Michi Tschuggnall. More info www.petergreier.com Austrian born guitarist Peter Greier started his musical journey at the age of six singing in the church! Learning trumpet at the age of thirteen he switched to guitar one year later. While the first years of playing were mainly self-taught, he studied guitar seriously at the Conservatory of Innsbruck/Austria and the Munich Guitar Institute (MGI) with additional lessons by some of the finest players on the planet (Steve McKenna, Frank Gambale, David Becker,). In the 80s to the early 90s he played in the local rock band "Precious Stone", releasing the Cd "feel it tonight". As a session player he was hired for various musicals like "rent", "jesus christ superstar", "little shop of horrors", "Hair", "Grease" and several bands from rock to funk to fusion. Since 2003 he is in the band of Austrian's Pop Idol winner Michael Tschuggnall. Although since the very beginning of his musical carrier he was writing songs, it took many years to come to bring out his first solo release "eat this!" in 2009, featuring some of Austria's finest musicans like Christian Wegscheider, Willi Langer and Alex Machacek. By merging all the different influences and styles he grew up playing and listening to, "eat this!" seems to cause quite an international stir not only to the worldwide guitar community. © 2002-2014 AbstractLogix http://www.abstractlogix.com/xcart/product.php?productid=24359

Peter Greier is an Austrian musician, guitarist more precise who release his first album last year , 2009 named Eat this, but also he has a long career dated from late '80's in this business collaborating a long time with many musicians and acting as a session musician as well. The music is from rock, to more jazzy approach here and there, always very catchy and well played. Also are two track with vocals, one with female Sabine Greier and one with Walch. The music is ok, in places even great, but as a whole something is missing, I don't know exactly but if this was released 15 years ago it would be something else but today I'm not so impressed anymore, but doesn't mean is bad, only not really very interisting, just well played. Pieces like G1, Hendi or Saturday shows his talent, but the rest is just ok, good but nothing special. So a worthy 3 stars, but I'm not so impressed now as if I was 15 years in this kind of music. Still, a good record. ***/5 © b_olariu Sep 22 2010 © 2000 - 2013 rateyourmusic.com http://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/peter_greier/___eat_this_/

Cool rocking fusion with some good catchy compositions and a nice jazz touch from the talented Austrian Guitarist Peter Greier. Some awesome playing by Greier and excellent musicianship all round including great guitar soloing from fellow Austrian Alex Machacek on "Hendi". The Austrian Popidol winner Michi Tschuggnall on bass, piano, and vocals also adds hugely to the quality of this album. There is nothing groundbreaking here, and it isn’t mind blowing power fusion in the style of guitarists like Brett Garsed , Greg Howe or Allan Holdsworth. Nevertheless it’s an album that deserves a bigger hearing from an exceptional Austrian guitarist. [All tracks @ 320 Kbps: File size = 165 Mb]

The Collins / Wardingham Project

The Collins / Wardingham Project - Interactive - 2006 - Enigmatic Records

"Truly one of the best fusion albums I have ever heard. 10/10" - dprp.net

"First class stuff all the way" - prognosis.com

"Planet X finally has some competition" - seaoftranquility.org

This is one CD I think a lot of people probably wouldn't be aware of and especially if your a fan of prog-fusion you are missing out on some great music. I picked up a copy a while ago and was thinking that our readers here at Sea Of Tranquility should really be aware of it as it really is that good. If Planet X and On The Virg are your thing this is sure to impress. Like Virgil Donati, Grant Collins, who is also Australian, is an accomplished drummer whose high level of independence and skill behind the drums has to be seen to be believed. On this release he has teamed up with Paul Wardingham who handles both guitar and keyboard duties like a true master. There is a complex mix of prog-fusion on Interactive with touches of jazz and world music. There are also quite a lot of heavier moments on here like the tracks "Attack Of The Necromongers" and "Bionic Zit Xpander"... what cool song titles! I love the one of many impressive moments on this CD when Grant plays along at the 6.18 minute mark virtually soloing over the top on the opening and title track "Interactive". Though we all hear many albums where musicians are highly skilled at their craft, but it's so complex the songs gets lost so what's the point?. That isn't the case here on Interactive and there is plenty of diversity and surprises to hold you attention while being amazed at Grant and Paul's ability. Planet X finally has has some competition with the Collins/Wardingham Project. Review by & © Scott Jessup ****1/2 August 15th 2008 © 2004 Sea Of Tranquility http://www.seaoftranquility.org/reviews.php?op=showcontent&id=6679

As an enthusiastic fusion fan, I have diligently followed the artists that have not only helped define the genre, but also have tried to stay on top of some of the hotter players on the modern scene as well, and while the golden era was where some of the very best was born, certainly some very impressive music has been developed by modern era musicians that were hugely inspired by the pioneers of jazz/rock. I have become a big fan of the band Planet X, and before them, drummer Virgil Donati released a most excellent fusion cd called On The Virg - Serious Young Insects, he featured some of Australia's premier music talent on that cd, I have always hoped that we would get another chance to hear an additional OTV cd, but with Donati now a full time PX member, well, it's just as good. 2006 was the year we anxiously expected to hear a new PX, but issues with the recording process have delayed it, yet, here I am listening to this band, also from Australia, The Collins/Wardingham Project, and I am astounded at what I am hearing, in fact, take all my commentaries about PX and OTV and simply add this disc right along next to them. I have honestly never heard of either of Dave Collins the drummer or Paul Wardingham the gutiarist. Yet both are seriously skilled musicians that have taken the time to create a cd that offers up some of the finest modern fusion I have had the pleasure of hearing since, well, the last Planet X cd. Simply put, this cd is just that good, and these guys are equal to the task, both have world class chops, and prove that they can go beyond pure riff based music to create complexity and intricate music at the same level as both OTV or PX. There have been a lot of artists taking a try at mixing the elements of jazzrock and metal, and the results seem to favor the combining of skill level and composing, we have heard the LTE cds, OTV, PX, and other artists such as Counter World Experience, 7 for 4 both from Germany, all are great bands for this small genre, and while it's a small handful of bands that are able to do this music with the necessary ingredients, count The Collins/Wardingham Project as one that fits the company of these artists perfectly as a welcome addition. Dave Collings is the bands drummer, he has that kind of inventive flare that feeds this music, able to utilize odd time signatures, mutated polyrhythms, and creative fills, this music requires a monster player to make it work, and he serves the role to perfection, no doubt he is a drummer who is on the verge of being discovered with his performance on this recording, no pun intended. Guitarist Paul Wardingham, originally from the UK, now residing in Australia, compliments Collins' drum talents with precision technique and a mastering of tones, modes and technical brilliance. Both these musicians will certainly make a solid impression on any fans of the artists mentioned in this review, and the sound of the band is not limited to guitar and drums, there is plenty of bass and keyboards, in fact, if you enjoyed the tonal elements that Derek Sherinian injects into his PX band, a similar keyboard vibe is ever present with The C/W Project. No need to attempt to expound any further, this is first class stuff all the way, if you are in any way intrigued at the description of this band, make a believer of yourself by clicking the Myspace link and hearing for yourselves, better yet, purchase the cd while your at it, you will not be disappointed. - Review by & © MJBrady © ProGGnosis 2000 - 2014 where appropriate - All rights reserved. http://www.proggnosis.com/Release_Detail.aspx?RID=21463

Good all instrumental album of progressive metal jazz fusion with Grant Collins on drums and Paul Wardingham on keys and guitars. The music is reminiscent of artists like Derek Sherinian, Planet X, LTE, or On the Virg. The musicianship is of the highest calibre with especially good keyboard arrangements and marvellous drumming. Paul Wardingham’s guitar playing has been compared to that of Allen Holdsworth, but what guitar fusion player has not been compared to Holdsworth? Anyway, that’s a minor point. The technical skills and compositional skills of these guys are worthy of great praise, and the album is HR by A.O.O.F.C. Listen to Paul Wardingham’s great “Assimilate Regenerate” album and Grant Collins' "Dogboy" album. Read an interview with Paul @ http://www.progmetalzone.com/2012/paul-wardingham-interview/ For similar music, listen to Christian Muenzner’s ‘Timewarp’ album [All tracks @ 320 Kbps: File size = 124 Mb]

Hydra (Citriniti Related)

Hydra (Citriniti) - Odd World - 2002 - Ind.

Citriniti is named after brothers, Danilo and Domenico Citriniti born in Catanzaro, Italy. Drummer Danilo and bassist Domenico gradually shifted their focus from math metal to complex progressive fusion instrumentals, rich in advanced techniques. The intricacy and sophistication of their music is easier to understand when considering that these two stellar musicians grew up going with their father to his gigs and have shared a lifetime of playing together. The level of intuitive musical interplay and synergy created by the Citriniti brothers is a powerful force that inspires awe from fellow musicians. After recording their first effort Hydra Odd World in 2002, the brothers Citriniti began planning their greatest musical achievement to date, Between The Music And Latitude. This album, released on 2006, features Italian session veteran Fabrizio Leo who has played with many successful Italian artists and is known for being one of the best guitarists in Italy. Their songs are an incredible set of intricate compositions, built on tight interplay between the three musicians. In the tradition of other great instrumental projects of this genre, such as Henderson, Smith and Wooten, Liquid Tension Experiment and Howe, Wooten and Chambers, this record is brimming with important performances, both by the ensemble and by each individual musicians jaw-dropping solos. Tone Center has built a strong reputation in the marketplace from recording high caliber musical unions and "Between The Music And Latitude" is a CD that progressive rock and fusion fans will be hailing for many years to come. Mike Varney: "Between the Music and Latitude it is a fantastic effort. You are all stellar musicians! So far, you guys have been the best that I have received from Italy, production, music, songwriting, playing, etc.. " 3rd may 2008, release date of the Citriniti new album! Featuring Fabrizio Leo all guitars and Andrea DePaoli solo keyboards. Their 2008 self-titled cd, is a heavier, more powerful, more progressive and more metallic effort than their previous record. Eleven instrumental tracks are offered, designed to satisfy all the various types of fans of their music. 12/2011 from Citriniti bros: we've officially retired from playing live and recording. ©2000-2014 Metal Storm http://www.metalstorm.net/bands/biography.php?band_id=7729&bandname=Citriniti

Taking a break from the six-string, we're presented with - a six-string! Bass, that is. The southern Italian brothers Domenico Citriniti (bass) and Danilo Citriniti(drums), known as Hydra, submitted their all-original, twelve track instrumental fusion CD-R, entitled Odd World. Talk about a CD-R that needs to get to the pressing plant so the world can enjoy it - this recording features some excellent bass and drums dominated fusion. An added bonus is that they've recruited a number of guitarists, such as Salvatore Ciambrini (guitar on "The Spider" and three others) and Luciano Aloise (guitar on "Insert Miles") to contribute blistered solos to a number of tracks. Domenico has mastered the art of writing compositions around his massive abilities on the six-string bass - it's just as engaging as you'd hope any fusion record might be. Danilo really lays down a great groove for his brother as well; overall, the musicianship is top-notch throughout. The entire project was laid down in their home studio. Impressive! © 1996-2013 Guitar Nine All Rights Reserved http://www.guitar9.com/undiscov41e.html

This is high octane hard edged fusion, and considering it's national origin, Italy, this is proving that great music, as well as great musicians are coming from every imaginable country. Italy of course has a deep tradition in great music no matter the genre, and fusion is something they are perhaps not so well known for. Hydra is mainly two brothers DANILO CITRINITI - Drums/Keyboards, and DOMENICO CITRINITI - Six String Bass, and joining them are a trio of guitarists that share and assist in the creations of the brothers Citriniti. both the brothers are simply outrageous virtuoso musicians, and stand out from the start to the finish of this cd. Domenico, on bass is one to watch for, his playing is straight from the Alain Caron, Stuart Hamm, Adam Nitti school. He has amazing chops and is never shy to use these skills to drive his brothers drumming skills to the limit, call it family chemistry if you will, but there is no doubt that they are on the same page as far as talent, performance and musical styles are concerned. Considering the skills of the musicians involved, the songs are geared to showcase the limitless abilities of all involved, no doubt that people who love over the top musicianship, particularly the bass, and drums are in for a real treat upon hearing this music, which by the way can be sampled at mp3.com. Danilo Citriniti, doubles on both keyboards and drums, and be honest, I am not entirely sure what he would claim to be his main forte, suffice it to say, he is equally impressive at both, and for my ears, he can really manipulate the drum kit much with the best of them. His playing is aggressive, as well as vigorously improvisational, in many ways he reminds me of a couple other drummer, one being Anders Johansson, and another Swedish player by the name of Morgan Agren. I can only hope that Hydra's music finds it's audience, which from my experiences is a global one, this way the band can keep refining their style, and perpetuate some more cds of this outlandish fusion. If you enjoy bands in the style of Spaced Out, or other bass heavy hard fusion musics, find this cd, you will fiind this some very good stuff indeed. – By & © MJBrady ProGGnosis © 2000 - 2014 where appropriate - All rights reserved. http://www.proggnosis.com/Release_Detail.aspx?RID=6308

Citriniti was an Italian instrumental metal/fusion band named after brothers Danilo (drums) and Domenico (bass). The intricacy and sophistication in their music naturally evolved from a lifetime of playing together. Citriniti played mostly instrumental progressive jazz fusion and metal, using rich and advanced techniques. This is complex and challenging jazz metal fusion, and if you like artists like Combination Head, Liquid Tension Experiment, Mike Keneally, David Torn, Wayne Krantz, and great innovative guitarists in general, you may find what you are looking for in this album of super tech and speedy metal fusion with a real biting edge! Fabrizio Leo played with the band from 2006-2008 and does not play on this 2002 album, but three other guitarists, Salvatore Ciambrini, Luciano Aloise, and Alex Bevilacqua put in some tremendous work. The album is HR by A.O.O.F.C. Check out the immensely talented Italian session guitarist Fabrizio Leo’s “Cutaway” album, and try and listen to Citriniti’s “Between The Music And Latitude” albums. BIO

Domenico a bass player and Danilo a drummer are two young musicians, born and raised in southern Italy (Catanzaro). Their career in music started in the late '80's, thanks to their father, who was also a musician with a passion for music which he had passed on to his sons. They played music just for fun until one day they had realized it was more than that, music was part of them. The musical scene in southern Italy hardly brought many opportunities to a musician so they put together their first band in 1989 playing metal. This band was around for a few years where they made a couple of demo tapes getting great reviews from well known music magazines. This led them to become part of a CD Collection and playing live concerts in the area, not bad for a start, but the brothers wanted to keep pursuing their music career by exploring new styles. In '92 Danilo became part of the metal band "Glacial Fear" which many metal fans remember the band for the power drumming. Danilo recorded a demo tape and a 45" vinyl with the "Glacial Fear", receiving great reviews and being asked to play many live concerts. Moving in other directions with many new music styles, Danilo and Domenico were getting much more experience joining a variety of local and national bands playing for many different artists. Before starting their first projects "Hydra" together they recorded 3 demo CD's solo, "Demo Bass" by Domenico, WateReign" by Danilo who was the keyboard player with a New Age style and the following year "Over Drums" also by Danilo. In 2002 they decided to self produce a CD together and after a few months with alot of hard work they came out with their new project "Hydra", based on drums and bass. "Hydra" represents all of the ideas and experiences which have matured over the years. The CD includes 10 original songs based on the rhythmic section, written and arranged by Danilo and Domenico. Their friends had also been part of the project playing the guitar to make the CD complete. The recording was done in their Home Studio. "They feel was the best solution for a musician who wants to be creative and working very closely with their own music." Among the many musicians who have inspired and influenced them are Chick Corea, Allan Holdsworth, Frank Zappa, Tribal Tech, Virgil Donati, Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Weckl, John Patitucci, Michael Manring, Victor Wooten, Stuart Hamm, Journey, Jonathan Cain... and JACO... Danilo and Domenico's ultimate goal is to have as many people around the world listening to their music and feeling their groove. © https://archive.org/details/iuma-hydra_danilo_e_domenico_citriniti

Randy Coven

Randy Coven - Witch Way - 2002 - Lion Music

Randy Coven, a versatile bassist who worked with Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen and Leslie West over the years, has died at age 54. Coven’s family has confirmed his passing on May 20, though a cause of death was not revealed. Services for Coven will be held later today (May 22). Coven was a specialist in neoclassical and heavy metal styles perhaps best known for having toured with Malmsteen from 1999-2001, a period chronicled on the 2009 concert recording ‘Live in Korea.’ The guitarist’s over-the-phone audition of Coven reportedly went something like this: “Do you drink beer?” “Do you play with a pick?” “And do you play a Fender bass?” Coven was said to have answered “yes,” “yes” and “yes,” securing the job. He struck up a friendship with Vai while attending Berklee College of Music, and the two formed a late-’70s group called Morning Thunder. Vai later joined Coven on the title track of the bassist’s best-known solo effort, 1985′s ‘Funk Me Tender.’ Alice Cooper, Asia and Megadeth guitarist Al Pitrelli appeared on Coven’s sophomore solo album, ‘Sammy Says Ouch!,’ and later worked with Coven as part of a late-’80s group called CPR. While with CPR, Coven collaborated with Deep Purple‘s Steve Morse and Zakk Wylde of the Ozzy Osbourne band. His work with West, of Mountain fame, included 1994′s ‘Dodgin’ The Dirt’ and 1999′s ‘As Phat As It Gets.’ More recently, Coven released a 2002 solo album called ‘Witch Way,’ worked as part of A.R.K. and MCM, and appeared along with Joe Lynn Turner on a 2005 album by Russian pianist Vitalij Kuprij. by & © Nick DeRiso May 22, 2014 11:29 AM © http://ultimateclassicrock.com/randy-coven-dies/

Stu Hamm and Billy Sheehan seemed to get the most magazine coverage for their supreme bass-playing acrobatics during the late '80s, but another gentleman was right up there in the tapping/slapping department of rock bass -- Randy Coven. Like both aforementioned players, Coven was a pal of Steve Vai, and first graced the pages of such publications as Guitar for the Practicing Musician around the same time. While he turned many a head with such releases as Funk Me Tender and Sammy Says Ouch!, little was heard from Coven throughout the '90s. Now, 12 years after his last release comes Coven's third solo effort, 2002's Witch Way. With Coven joined by a pair of renowned rock guitarists -- Mountain's Leslie West and gun-for-hire Al Pitrelli (the latter of whom penned a couple of songs here) -- Witch Way expectedly focuses on the bassist's four-string skills, but turns out to be a musical potpourri. Included is a Spyro Gyra-esque easy listening jazz number, "Island Dream"; a song that sounds straight off of Frank Zappa's early-'80s albums, "Love Kitchen"; as well as a moody instrumental reading of a Doors classic tune, here named "Ryders on the Storm." © Greg Prato © 2014 AllMusic, a division of All Media Network, LLC. | All Rights Reserved http://www.allmusic.com/album/witch-way-mw0000458283

The late bassist extraordinaire Randy Coven said of this album, "Today, during all this chaos, I have found myself returning to my fusion roots on my latest CD "Witch Way". This CD represents all the years of pent up musical energy I needed to release, or I will explode CD!" “Witch Way” is a good combination of fusion and funk by the late bassist. This album has received some criticism over the band’s treatment of The Door’s classic, “Riders On The Storm”. A lot of people didn’t like the fusion treatment and the keyboard work, but what the hell? It’s not a bad cover, and hardly sacrilege, and definitely does not spoil a great but too short album. This album can be complex and experimental at times, but the music is varied and it’s a classy instrumental album with contributions from Leslie West, Al Pitrelli, John Macaluso and more. Salvatore Russo & William Stravato

Salvatore Russo & William Stravato - Contact - 2004 - Axe Magazine # 90

An Italian collaboration of epic proportions - brilliant axe man William Stravato and blazing rock fusion guitarist Salvatore Russo have joined forces to bring you Russo/Stravato - "Contact". Featuring over forty minutes and eight instrumental tracks of blazingly shredded licks and tasty musical treats in the Greg Howe / Shawn Lane tradition, both guitarists have gone beyond their respective solo albums, dipping into their extensive vocabulary of expressive devices to offer hyperactive twists and turns, indulgent embellishments, undeniable energy and modern flash - all powered by the relentless rhythmic drive of drummer Daniele Chiantese. © 1996-2013 Guitar Nine All Rights Reserved http://www.guitar9.com/news2004-07.html

Very technical and demonstrative shred fusion album, full of amazing guitar wizardry. The album, by two guitar virtuosos Salvatore Russo and William Stravato was originally distributed as a very limited edition optional extra with the Italian monthly magazine for guitarists Axe (# 90, July / August 2004) and contains eight previously unreleased tracks. Virgil Donati

Virgil Donati - In This Life - 2013 - Virgil Donati

This cd is probably going to end up as my favorite for calender year 2013, it is simply that good. Virgil Donati, the sensational drummer that has appeared in Planet X, On the Virg, Loose Change, Southern Sons, CAB, Ring of Fire, etc, etc, etc. has put together a great release with this, his actual first as a solo artist. Yet it has everything that the fans of OTV, Planet X, and CAB have come to enjoy, and that is, first class, top tier fusion music with a major progressive twist, and fantastic contributions from a wide array of old friends, and some new surprises as well: 01. Rhythm Zero - featuring, Doug Shreeve on bass, Marco Sfogli and Irwin Thomas on guitars, Sfogli has gotten a lot of noteriety of late with his involvement with Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie and his solo efforts, Irwin Thomas is a former bandmate of Donati's from Southern Sons. Keyboards are courtesy of Alex Argento, from Italy, he released an incredible fusion cd called "Ego" a couple years back, a must have. This a a very complex and heavy tune, with excellent contributions by all, both Argento and Sfogli really shine here: 02. Eleven - feat. Evan Marien - bass, Sfogli - guitars, Ruslan Sirota - keys. Evan Marian, a bassist, Berklee grad, and one of the new sensations, shine on this song, as does Sirota on keys, this is an ethereal song, with Holdsworth like chord phrasings, and atypical odd time signatures throughout, nice to hear VD feature some of the newer players on the scene: 03. In this Life - title track feat. Doug Shreeve - bass, Sfogli - guitars, Brett Garsed - Guitars, Dennis Hamm and Alex Argento - keyboards. This song has a very Planet X feel to it, no surprise there I suppose, both Hamm and Garsed have contributed to the PX sound. Hard mathmatical fusion with sensational guitars: 04. Red Air - features - Shreeve, Thomas, Sfogli and Argento, yet another PX vibe tune, maybe this is the new VD band? we shall see, this is the kind of music that really sets Virgil Donati apart from the rest of the drummers out there, as he seems to have a trademark vibe to his arrangements and rhythmic complexity like no other. Even with this great new line up, the vibe transcends. Nice bass solo by Shreeve: 05. Paradise Lost - features - Alex Machacek - guitars, Shreeve - bass, Argento - Keys, Artyom Manukyam - cello. Perhaps the most ambitious sounding song I have heard by VD, very orchestrated, symphonic and sophisticated. Virgil offers some keyboards of his own on this tune. Machacek is amazing as always, and the harp sounds paired with the Cello is excellently integrated with the rest of the music. What a piece. The production is also very deserving of mention here: 06. The Fall of Dreams - Anthony Crawford - bass, Paul Sherman - Oboe/english Horn, Machacek - guitars, VD - Keys. This song like the previous are quite a change in musical direction for VD, showcasing his taste for more than just heavy music, but just as challenging none the less. Superb attention to detail in the orchestration, and great musicianship on display, for whatever reason this music gives me a bit of a Mahavishnu/Shakti vibe, a real treat for the ears: 07. Iceland - features - Tom Kennedy - bass, Rafael Moreira - guitars, Simon Hotsford - guitars, Jeff Babko - keys. Appropriately named song, features some old friends in Hotsford and Babko, who VD has collaborated with in the past. Some really intricate dual soloing by Babko and Moriera make this a special treat, as do their solos: 08. Trinity - feat. Shreeve, Sfogli, Argento, this is more high energy PX meets OTV music, great duets, and equally excellent solos, and some of the most obscene odd meter playing allowed in music: 09. Voice of Reason - featuring - Anthony Crawford - bass, Sfogli and Argento. A trudging track that has no repetition, at least that you can follow, this line up here shows that VD is ready to move ahead here, I truley believe his has found a couple of kindred spirits in Sfogli and Argento, two marvelous Italian musicians who are second to none. Hopefully their involvement here will allow the fusion circles to take notice: 10. The Empire - Feat: Shreeve, Sfogli, Argento, Hotsford and Argento. Why not end the cd in an epic, ten minute display of epic progressive infused fusion music, an adventure with no limits, and the usual display of world class musicianship played masterfully in a band setting, wow!!: So I typically do not enjoy reviewing cds track by track, I felt it was neccessary being each track had unique contributions from so many different artists. I have alway loved most everything Virgil Donati has done from a fusion perspective, OTV and PX will always rate with the very best fusion albums all time with me, and this cd is at the very least, a hint better than those, perhaps because of the contributions of each performer being captured in rare form on this cd. Again the production quality of the sound is as good as it gets, and the details and complexity of the music make it even that much more amazing, this is a masterpiece of heroic proportions, a rare and unique combination of excellence and mastery. A must have for you fusion fans out there. - Review by & © MJBrady © ProGGnosis 2000 - 2014 where appropriate - All rights reserved. http://www.proggnosis.com/Release_Detail.aspx?RID=40087

Another incredible album of complex but original progressive fusion from the Australian drum virtuoso, Virgil Donati aided by six guitarists, four bassists, five keyboardists, a cellist, and an oboist. Virgil Donati doesn’t do things by halves. Only the best musicians play on his albums, as Virgil only plays on the best artist’s albums. Virgil continues to push the limits of percussion and progressive fusion to astonishing new levels. VHR by A.O.O.F.C. ABOUT MAREK RADULI

Marek Raduli was born in south-west Poland in 1959. He received a thorough musical education (percussion class, completed in 1980). Since 1982 he has been working as a professional guitarist in many popular and famous pop and rock groups (including “Budka Suflera”- one of the few top Polish supergroups). He was a contributor to the creation of more than 30 albums recorded with first-class performers. He also cooperated with jazz musicians, steadily developing his interests in the field of fusion music. That resulted in producing his own record, “MSS” (“Mexican Symbol of Happiness”, 1996), which was later reissued twice (1998, 2001). In 1997 Raduli was hailed as “the Guitarist of the Year” by the most prestigious Polish music magazine “Gitara i Bas”; since then he has been occupying top positions in the magazine’s charts. Since 1999, Raduli has been regularly invited to many musical training sessions organized all over Poland as a lecturer. In 2003 he decided to create his own group “Pi-eR-2”. (Or TTR2) To form a trio, he teamed up with his two friends; Wojtek Pilichowski (very active in performing pop, fusion and jazz music, drummer of the rising generation, famous for his technical virtuosity, the author of many handbooks teaching how to play the bass) and Tomek Losowski. Both of them were chosen to be “the Best Rhythmic Section” in the year 2004 (by above-mentioned music magazine, “Gitara i Bas”). Raduli also works in many other settings (e.g. he appears in groups formed by Krzysztof Scieranski, very well-known in Europe as a solo bassist), but his own trio was a ‘Number One Project’. Their successful debut took place in Germany at “Ingolstadter Jazz Tage 2003”. Being heard in many other configurations, for quite a long time, Raduli played simultaneously in a band called “Funk dE Nite” (several concert tours and live album – 2004) together with trumpeter Saskia Laroo (Holland), bassist Steve Logan (USA) and a keyboard & vocal magician, Warren Byrd (USA). Raduli also had his contribution playing in a quartet created by Zbigniew Jakubek (one of the best Polish keyboardists). Raduli has never been confined to the stage only; he managed to generate music to a feature film (2004), he is pleased to contribute his talents to many charity projects (helping poor children in Poland or other musicians with serious health problems or tsunami victims). He is always ready to help young performers by taking part in their recording sessions. He is also willing to play with alternative or “niche” groups, e.g. Carrantouhill – a Polish band performing Celtic/Irish folk music. In 2004 they decided to record material for an album together with such Polish jazz giants as vocal world-star Ula (Urszula) Dudziak, Wojciech Karolak (kbs & Hammond), Tomasz Szukalski (sax), bass-master Krzysztof Scieranski and vibraphone virtuoso, Bernard Maseli. Raduli’s skills are widely recognized and appreciated; he has been constantly topping the Internet charts and rankings ( www.fusion.pl ) as the best Polish guitarist playing fusion/jazz-rock music, and his guitar solos have become well-known standards in Polish pop and rock music. In March of 2005, first CD of ‘Pi-eR-2’ group - ‘TRANSPORTER’ - was released, supported by intensive line of live performances in jazz clubs all around Poland. In a whole year of 2005, Marek gave almost 100 concerts (with various bands) and accepted several invitations to play guitar as guest on recordings sessions of various artists. Also, he started to collect material for his second solo album, which release is planned on spring of 2007. The band was created by Krzysztof Ścierański - bg, Paul Wertico - dr (ex-Pat Metheny Group, SBB), Bernard Maseli - vib (Walk Avay) and Marek Raduli - g. Several concerts including Poland, Slovakia (Bratislava), Hungary (Budapest) and Germany (Ingolstadt, XXI Jazztage Festiwal). Edited by bmxgamer on 19 Jan 2007, 11:05 © 2014 Last.fm Ltd. Wayne Krantz, Keith Carlock, Tim Lefebvre

Wayne Krantz, Keith Carlock, Tim Lefebvre - Krantz Carlock Lefebvre - 2009 - Abstract Logix

The American guitarist Wayne Krantz is a real one-off. He sounds somewhere between John Scofield and Bill Frisell at times, and he has toured in the legacy version of Steely Dan, which has had an audible impact on his playing. But Krantz is also an unflinching adventurer who dislikes repeating himself or imitating others, and possibly dislikes the music industry even more. This trio's famously long residency at New York's 55 Bar used to be documented by downloadable recordings of the gigs the same night, and though the guitarist has access to a conventional recording studio here, he has kept the same improvisational live feel, augmenting it with some overdubbed theme statements and quirkily offhand vocals on four tracks. Krantz is accompanied by his regular partners, Tim Lefebvre (bass) and Keith Carlock (drums), and the bone-crunching three-way conversation they keep up joins the impact of a heavy rock power-trio to the harmonic sleight-of-hand and melodic slipperiness of a contemporary jazz band. Some pieces are dark, churning, raw-sound growls, while others are drawlingly countrified; there's a rock-virtuosity tribute to Jeff Beck, and Rugged Individual is almost a reassuring ballad. © John Fordham guardian.co.uk, Thursday 15 October 2009 21.49 BST © Guardian News and Media Limited 2010 http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/oct/15/wayne-krantz-cd-review

Fans of electric guitarist Wayne Krantz have been waiting well over a decade to hear something new or commercially available on CD, and here it is. It seems he's a more mature player, not as raucous or raw as in previous years where volume and screaming, high-pitched sounds were favored. Not to say he's refined his approach, but it seems as if Krantz is more interested in flowing composition, symmetry, and teamwork within funky beats rather than trying to stand above the plethora of rock-oriented jazz guitarists. With bassist Tim Lefebvre and drummer Keith Carlock, Krantz has a solid idea of what he wants to portray, and compact ideas swimming around in his head and fingers. There's only a modicum of noodling, some inane vocalizing here and there, but it does not detract from the overall message he's attempting to get across. He might even be heard as a thoughtful tunesmith on the languid "Rushdie," a slow and introspective "The Earth from Above," or "Moseley." While faster externally, "Left It on the Playground" is a nine-minute jam, at times wonky, but for the most part exploring some interesting industrialized effects. Then again, there are those untamed moments, as on the appropriately titled "War-Torn Johnny" or the hard-edged "Holy Joe" where the razor-edge impulses of Krantz cannot be denied. It is his tribute, "Jeff Beck," where the guitarist adds something unique, as vocal-type, faux-wah-wah sounds from Lefebvre set up some choppy and looser lines, while a much more defined blues in 6/8 time signifies "Rugged Individual." Of the vocal selections, the anthem for sommeliers "Wine Is the Thread" works best in its soulful, song-style repast, but it is not a strong suit. Krantz admitted he became discouraged with the music business, as working diligently on a project did not mean the recording would get proper promotion or distribution. Since the advent of the Internet, he's made live performances available as downloads. This project has a spontaneous, liquid quality to it that may very well establish a new concept for a figure far too talented to take any more time away from the studio to document his pithy, intriguing music. © 2009 Rovi Corporation. Guitarist Wayne Krantz's latest release Krantz Carlock Lefebvre (Abstract Logix) is more than just a great album, it's an exciting event - both for Krantz's career, and for the guitar community at large. This predominantly instrumental disc is Krantz's first studio album to include his long-time trio mates Keith Carlock (Drums), and Tim Lefebvre (Bass). While it's technically a Krantz solo album, Krantz Carlock Lefebvre is very much a band effort (hence the name I'm assuming). Unfortunately for me, the music on this disc is as hard to describe as Krantz himself. Though he's generally been regarded as a jazz player, there's a lot of rock in Krantz's playing as well (in addition to his solo work, he's played with artists as diverse as Steely Dan, Leni Stern, and Chris Potter). These styles, along with his impassioned dedication to improvisation, come through loud and clear on this album. Having said that, I wouldn't call Krantz Carlock Lefebvre a fusion recording - for some reason, despite the heaviness and the harmony, that label doesn't seem right to me. It's at once more rock than fusion, and more jazz than rock. In other words, it's uniquely Krantz. Krantz is one of those rare players who can play one phrase and you immediately know it's him. His signature percussive attack, coupled with a unique approach to improvising make him instantly recognizable. He's been releasing live material in both CD and downloadable formats for years, but the last "Wayne Krantz" studio album was 1993's Long To Be Loose (a great record). If you're looking for the type of writing and lines that Krantz provided on that album, you'll need to look elsewhere. Krantz has morphed into a more adventurous player since those days, both in his improvising and his choice of guitar tones. His lines are more intervallic and almost herky-jerky now; lots of double stops and octave displaced phrasing. His clean tones are still gorgeous, but he's using a wide palette of distorted tones as well, often augmented by an octave divider or wah-wah, which in turn has brought out a stronger Hendrix-like influence in his playing. Krantz has a bolder approach to writing than he has in the past also. Subdued chordal sections are often followed by pedal-stomping "wake up!" sections, as if he's attempting to shake the listener out of their seat. You're aware of all of this already if you've been following Krantz's live material over the past several years. With Krantz Carlock Lefebvre, Krantz has finally taken his current sound and attitude, along with his trio's tight chemistry, and brought it into the studio to be documented and built upon. The opening track "It's No Fun Not To Like Pop" is one of 4 songs on the album that feature Krantz on "vocals." I put vocals in quotes because they aren't utilized in the way you're probably used to. For this tune, the line "It's no fun not to like pop" is literally the beginning and end of the vocal content. This line is dropped in at various points during the jaunty main riff, almost as another instrument or effect. Eventually, the piece gives way to an improvisational mid-section, filled with delay effects and molten guitar tones. Before you know it, the maelstrom comes to an abrupt halt, and the tightly composed opening sections return. It's the first taste of what appears to be Krantz's vision for this album - fearless group improv mixed with provocative writing. After the rocking instrumental "War-Torn Johnny," (which includes some impressive drum work by Carlock through the trippy improv section), the mood shifts for "Rushdie," a gorgeous track that continually gathers steam as it goes along. Krantz provides a pair of polar-opposite guitar solos on this one - a snappy acoustic turn full of lyricism and dynamics, followed abruptly by a distorted wah-wah solo. This song alone is a great example of the musical shift that Krantz has taken during the years since Long To Be Loose. The guitarist that recorded that album was not the unapologetic risk-taker that recorded this one. Following "Rushdie" is one of my favorites, "Wine Is The Thread" - a great song that features a smidge of vocals, and a bluesy sliding-sixths melody. The wild, improvisational mid-section is a further example of the wide range of approaches Krantz takes with tone and contrast on this album. "The Earth From Above" is a beautiful chordal and double-stop oriented piece, that is probably the most thoroughly composed song on the album. It's followed in stark contrast by the almost completely improvised "Left It On The Playground." This highly experimental soundscape features Carlock's most intense workout on the album, as well as Krantz's most liberal use of delay and ring modulator effects. Very "out there" stuff. The next track is titled "Jeff Beck" due to the fact that Krantz submitted a demo of the song to the legendary player, though Beck hasn't used it. Love the cool jazzy chords and the white-hot guitar solo on this one. "I Was Like" is a pure rock tune, with more vocals than any other song on the album. Krantz provides two simultaneous guitar solos on this track, which seriously ratchets up the intensity. The mood shifts yet again with "Mosley," a slower tune with a deliberate groove that features some of Lefebvre's best playing on the disc. Another standout is the highly dynamic "Holy Joe" - the last vocal tune. This uptempo song is arguably the most technical composition here, and everyone is up to the task. The acoustic accents and dry vocal tones add a nice touch. The disc closes with the deep ballad "Rugged Individual." The thing that sticks with you about this tune is how the group respects the mood of the piece when they venture into improvisational territory. Everyone leaves plenty of space for the song to breathe, while still providing input to the music. Great stuff. One of the trademarks of Krantz's live performances is the amount of group improvising that takes place. In a wise move, Krantz decided to bring that strength to the studio for Krantz Carlock Lefebvre, and the results are fantastic. Moreover, the pre-composed portions of the music are very deep, and very guitar-oriented. This disc is loaded with great, often over-the-top guitar tones, and killer playing by Krantz and his bandmates. Krantz Carlock Lefebvre is absolutely one of my favorite albums of the year. Highly recommended. © Rich © 2004 - 2012 Rich Murray. All Rights Reserved. http://www.guitar-channel.com/rich_murray/2009/08/review-wayne-krantz-krantz-carlock-lefebvre.html

A great album of jazz rock/fusion from three masters of their instruments. There is some ferocious guitar playing here from Wayne Krantz. Wayne has a unique playing style and is a real multi-dimensional player. The bass work from Tim Lefebvre, is an education in itself, and of course the drumming from the unbelievably talented Keith Carlock is out of this world. There are some quiet moments on the album, but overall it's very, very impressive. The three guys produce some magical grooves. Listen to Wayne Krantz and Leni Stern's "Separate Cages" album. You can also hear some of Wayne's superb guitar work on Donald Fagen's "Morph The Cat" and Chris Potter's “Underground” album. It is also worthwhile listening to Keith Carlock on Marian McPartland's "Piano Jazz: McPartland/Steely Dan", a great in-studio radio recording. Check out John Petrucci's great "Suspended Animation" album which features Tim Lefebvre. For music in a similar vein, listen to the late Emily Remler's "Transitions" music [All tracks @ 320 Kbps: File size = 131 Mb]

ABOUT KEITH CARLOCK (WIKI)

Keith Carlock is an American drummer originally from Clinton, Mississippi. He currently resides in New York City, NY. He has recorded and/or toured with such musical luminaries as Sting, Steely Dan, James Taylor, Donald Fagen, Walter Becker, Diana Ross, Faith Hill, The Blues Brothers Band, Leni Stern, David Johansen and the Harry Smiths, Richard Bona, Chris Botti, Wayne Krantz, Harry Belafonte, Oz Noy, Clay Aiken, Rascal Flatts, Paula Abdul and Grover Washington, Jr, to name a few. Perhaps the greatest testament to Carlock's mastery of the drums lies in him being the exclusive drummer for every track on Steely Dan's latest CD Everything Must Go (Steely Dan has used multiple drummers on each of the last several albums they've released over the past three decades, presumably because Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, with a reputation for relentless perfection in the studio, wanted a "specialist" drummer for each different groove required for a given song). While in the Jazz Studies program at the University of North Texas, Keith studied with many teachers, including Ed Soph. Keith is also the long time boyfriend of Ruff Ryders/Ruff Pop pop/rock singer/songwriter Lynne Timmes. In October 2009 he released an instructional DVD called "The Big Picture: Phrasing, Improvisation, Style, and Technique."

ABOUT WAYNE KRANTZ (WIKI)

Wayne Krantz (born July 26, 1956 in Corvallis, Oregon) is an innovative American musician, who is widely recognized as a technically advanced jazz fusion guitarist. He has played with top artists such as Steely Dan, John Zorn, Michael Brecker, Billy Cobham, and others, but currently has a solo act. Krantz released his first album, Signals, in 1991, sporting an array of recognized jazz musicians such as Dennis Chambers, Leni Stern, Anthony Jackson, and others. However, in 1992, he formed a trio with bassist Lincoln Goines and drummer Zach Danziger, and recorded two albums with them; Long To Be Loose, in 1993, and a live album, 2 Drink Minimum, in 1995. In doing so, he began to play periodically at the 55 Bar, a diverse and premier jazz club in New York City. In 1996, Krantz released an acoustic album with Leni Stern, dubbed Separate Cages. Wayne formed a new trio in 1997, consisting of his ferocious guitar skills, complemented by Tim Lefebvre on electric bass and Keith Carlock on drums, new sounds that would change his music's style drastically. On June 28, 2007, Krantz played his final regular Thursday night gig at NYC's 55 Bar. In an announcement by Krantz to his mailing list notifying his fans of the change, he stated a desire to move towards a "louder thing" requiring "bigger rooms, with stages and sound systems to pull it off." Krantz's first three solo albums were released on the jazz label, Enja Records, which was at the time also home to frequent collaborator Leni Stern. However, Krantz's last three albums, 1999's Greenwich Mean, 2003's Your Basic Live, and 2007's "Your Basic Live '06" were both released from Wayne's private website. Like 2 Drink Minimum, these two albums both are excerpts of various sets at the 55 Bar. These two albums also include more use of effects pedals, and are more unscripted and improvised than the previous three, implying Wayne's tendency towards nonconformism on and off the stage. He contributed to Steely Dan co-founder Donald Fagen's newest release, Morph the Cat, and participated in touring with Fagen's band in early 2006. In another rare sideman role, Krantz is featured on tenor saxophonist Chris Potter's 2006 release, "Underground." Additionally, he is to return to the studio in 2006 to record a new solo album, to be followed by touring. It is unknown whether this new album will feature Wayne's existing trio. Even with a lack of a record company, and thus an absence of excessive advertisement and sponsorship, Krantz's music still receives acclaim and a worldwide underground fan base, strongest in the New York metropolitan area and Britain. Wayne Krantz signed with record label Abstract Logix to release his first studio record in over fifteen years.Krantz Carlock Lefebvre (2009) features the core trio of Keith Carlock on drums, Tim Lefebvre on bass, and Wayne on guitar. As a guitarist, Krantz is known for being a relentless individualist, which is evidenced in his improvisational style. In his book "An Improviser's Operating System," Krantz outlines his approach to improvisation, which relies not on licks or memorized fretboard patterns but an awareness of musical "formulas" on the instrument. Krantz's improvisation is known for its spontaneity, and he makes a distinction between this form of improvisation and "composition," the latter of which may include any musical idea that is preconceived on the instrument. While many guitarists rely on other music as a model for their own playing, Krantz is highly committed to realizing his own voice on the instrument and claims not to derive a great deal of inspiration from other music. Though Krantz has studied other players in the past, he does not consider himself a stylist (i.e. someone who models his or her playing on a predefined stylistic template, such as pure bebop, rock, blues or funk.) In addition to its concern for melody and harmony, Krantz's music demonstrates a high rhythmic awareness, often incorporating polyrhythms, odd metric groupings and displaced beats. Krantz is most identified with a Stratocaster-type electric guitar. Recently he has played a model manufactured by Tyler Guitars. Earlier releases such as "Signals" feature a chorus effect commonly associated with fusion guitar. Within several years, however, his sound became more organic, featuring analog effects such as overdrive, wah-wah, and a Moogerfooger ring modulator. For amplification, Krantz has used both Fender Deluxe Reverb and, more recently, Marshall amplifiers for a heavier sound. On May 22, 2004, Krantz married smooth jazz vocalist Gabriela Anders. Together they live in New York City with their daughter Marley.

NYC based musician Bruce Arnold has got to be one of the most well-rounded guitarists currently recording in 2010. Following the passing of several years, mwe3.com caught up with Bruce only to find that he’s recently released no less than four quite different CDs in the past few years. First off among his latest albums is Heavy Mental by the Bruce Arnold Trio. Backed up by Andy Galore (bass) and Kirk Driscoll (drums), this is Bruce like you’ve never heard him. Who knew Bruce had such a hard hitting jazz-rock fusion instrumental side to his muse? Bruce was always an avant gard purveyor of the guitar—breaking down sonic walls with daredevil acumen—but on Heavy Mental, the sound is more guitar-centric jazz-rock fusion ala Terje Rypdal, Satch and Allan Holdsworth. The seven cut all instrumental Heavy Mental CD is superbly recorded, while in depth liner notes by noted jazz musicologist Bill Milkowski fills in the blanks on this amazing fully formed fusion outing. Nearly the same could be said about Arnold’s other 2010 release entitled The Art Of The Blues. Backed by Dean Johnson (bass) and Tony Moreno (drums), the twelve track CD is once again all instrumental but this is no easy on the ears blues based CD. With tracks written and recorded in time signatures like 7/4 and 9/4, Arnold’s Art Of The Blues combines to create a collection of tracks that—while sounding like a traditional jazz guitar set—actually presents a new approach for Arnold and clearly is a refreshing redirection for the blues. Fitting in perfectly with Arnold’s daring approach to the electric guitar is Secret Code—written and recorded by Bruce Arnold and guitarist Jane Getter. A true tour de force of electric guitar extrapolations, the twelve track instrumental CD is at once avant garde in scope yet it’s completely captivating. The all-instrumental Secret Code combines a wealth of musical styles—from the straight ahead jazz guitar duo sound to a more adventurous concept taking in electronic flavors, distortion and wah-wah with synthetically processed sounds and organic, mellower sounds. One of Bruce Arnold's finest and most adventurous albums is his truly pioneering release of Sonic Infestation—a pairing with the like minded guitarist / percussionist John Stowell. A 2008 release, the CD really takes you out there with free improv and abstract sound collages that bring to mind ‘70s guitar pioneers like Fred Frith for example. No sonic stuck in the mud himself, Fred would probably dig Bruce overall, but I would think, especially Bruce’s release with John Stowell. Acoustic guitars, electronics, off the wall percussion and more collide on a CD that is truly inventive. Perhaps the thing that holds each of these four albums together—besides the inventive guitar work and inquisitive guitar based approach—is the high quality studio sonics of these recordings, which when combined, offers a state of the art glimpse into Bruce Arnold’s multifaceted and complex musical mind. © www.Muse-Eek.com / www.BruceArnold.com © 2000-2010 MWE3.com, Inc. In reviewing Bruce Arnold's "Heavy Mental," one first needs to clear the air a bit. Firstly, other than the clever pun in the title, there's actually not much that's conventionally "metal" here. This is essentially "heavy jazz fusion," with the rock elements played up. Nevertheless, if you're a fan of great guitar-playing — and power trios ala Cream and Primus — you're going to eat this one up. Granted, this is Arnold's 28th album, so the man obviously knows what he's doing. Still there's a freshness to tracks like "12 Tone Boogie," which meshes the freeform experimentation of jazz with the bluesy boogie of ZZ Top to excellent effect. Unlike a lot of guitar instrumental albums, there's not a lot of flash for flash's sake on "Heavy Mental," although the opening and ending to the funky "Lock And Key" border on Joe Satriani territory. When given the choice between a bluesy chord and blitzkrieg speed on the fretboard, most of the time, Arnold opts for the bluesy chord, adding quite a bit of grit to runes like "Dakota Gumbo," which almost feels in parts like a Jimmy Page outtake. As excellent as Arnold is, without a competent rhythm section backing him — and providing melodic heft when he's off in solo-land — the album would come off as sloppy. Fortunately, bassist Andy Galore and drummer Kirk Driscoll excel at every turn. Galore in particular gets plenty of chances to shine, particularly on "Multiplicity," in which his bass feels almost like its sharing the lead with Arnold's guitar. There's not much negative to report here, save that a couple tracks (the six-minute "Blues For Arnie" and the nearly eight-minute "Multiplicity") overstay their welcome just a little bit. Yes, at its heart, Bruce Arnold's "Heavy Mental" is a jazz album, but it's got more than enough rock heft behind it to make metalheads with a love for instrumental rock take notice. Highs: Excellent playing throughout, with "12 Tone Boogie" especially standing out: Lows: A couple tracks go on a bit long: Bottom line: Jazz-rock fusion that cranks up the volume enough to make metalheads take notice. [4/5 Excellent. (An excellent effort worth picking up)]Reviewed by & © EdgeoftheWorld on June 2, 2011 © 2000-2013 Metalunderground.com. Bruce Arnold’s guitar style has been compared to guitarists like Terje Rypdal and Allan Holdsworth. Allan and Terje are superb players and are capable of playing almost any style of music, not to mention their incredible abilities to play the most complex solos and incredible shredding. Bill Milkowski of jazztimes.com says, “The outcome of this inventive trio session is a fresh amalgam of visceral rock bombast, jazzy harmonies and cutting edge sonics, the likes of which haven’t been heard since Terje Rypdal’s wildly experimental mid ‘80s power trio, The Chasers. His 28th release overall, “Heavy Mental” is easily Arnold’s most hard-hitting and audacious outing to date. ” Bruce's soloing does not go “overboard” on this album, nor does he overplay, but he has a superb and unique guitar technique, and his playing is perfectly and deliberately adapted to his compositions here. This album is a marvellous example of innovative jazz blues rock fusion and HR by A.O.O.F.C. Prashant Aswani

Prashant Aswani - Sonically Speaking - 2010 - Exotic Rhythms

Guess what? That's right…! It's CD Review time again and I'm chompin' at the ol' horse bit to tell you all about this NEWest Album from the highly talented Instrumental Rock-Fusion Guitarist Prashant Aswani. To be truthful, I've been waiting for this album Sonically Speaking like I was a kid at 17 again who has just been turned on to the world of real music (not bubble-gum pop)… I've been following Prashant's career for a quite a few years now and this young Cat has grown so much musically that's it's been like following your favorite athlete who just keeps breaking new sports records… Maestro Aswani just keeps bending musical barriers with the way he forges sound. His song writing, arranging and recording skillz are to die for… While listening to this CD, the word "maturity" comes to mind. The music on Sonically Speaking skims across the ear drums like a flat rock skimming across a calm pristine body of water. Every time the rock slightly touches the surface of the water the music pulls you into a new direction and propels you even further and faster into his extraordinary mind-blowing muse. Prashant's music is always searching for that perfect sweet spot in each song… Then when he finds it, he'll dance around the motif with his incredible flashy but tasty lead guitar playing all the while teasing and tickling your aural senses. The master string bender knows just when to lay it down all the while giving you exactly what the Doctor ordered just in time, every time... That's the power of his music… There's this thing we call "tension and release" in music ... Prashant uses the technique very well in his sonically enticing arrangement… If you are into guyz like Jeff Beck, Satriani, Vai, Al Di Meola… Then I know you will thoroughly enjoy this music from Instrumental Guitarist Prashant Aswani… Sonically Speaking Of Course !!! © Scott Thomas March 25, 2012 at 6:41am © Facebook 2013 https://www.facebook.com/notes/scott-thomas/prashant-aswani-sonically-speaking-cd-review-by-scott-thomas/10150680298122156

Prashant Aswani’s latest album Sonically Speaking (Exotic Rhythms) features a rich set of melodic instrumental rock fusion songs that not only show his strengths as a guitarist and composer, but as a producer and arranger as well. The album is full of exceptional playing by both Aswani, and the lineup of great musicians he has brought along to support him. Aswani is joined on this release by Rhonda Smith (Jeff Beck, Prince) on bass, and Joey Heredia (Stevie Wonder, Tribal Tech, Steve Lukather) on drums. Abhijit Banerjee also appears on the album playing the Tabla, an Indian percussion instrument. This proves to be a fantastic personnel choice as Banerjee adds a highly distinctive dimension to the album. Guitarists Brett Garsed and Rob Caggiano are also onboard turning in some killer guest solos. Sonically Speaking is Aswani’s first full album of new material since 2000’s Duality (in 2007, Aswani re-released his 1998 debut Revelation as Revelation: Fully Loaded with new artwork and three new tracks). It’s also the first album in his catalog that he’s produced solely on his own. And while the playing and writing on this album are certainly top-notch, Aswani’s production work is equally impressive. He uses a multitude of layered guitar tones on most tracks to give the album a deep rich sound. The guitar parts themselves are arranged with a similar approach - many songs feature multiple clean rhythm tracks mixed together in such a way that you often forget there is no keyboard player on the album. Banerjee’s Tabla work is a major factor in the overall sound of Sonically Speaking as well. His contributions not only aid Aswani’s effort to lend the album some shades of his Indian roots - they also give the entire disc a unique sound that helps to separate it from the pack of often “cookie cutter” sounding instrumental rock guitar albums. Aswani’s highly melodic approach to writing is unique for this genre as well. Though there’s a motherlode of complex playing on Sonically Speaking, nearly all of the main song melodies are simple, hummable, and very catchy. As a result, this disc is full of tunes that stick in your head. From a guitar geek perspective, Sonically Speaking is a goldmine of killer tones and state-or-the-art playing. Aswani’s lead tone on the disc is buttery smooth - warmly overdriven without a hint of fuzz, while his clean tones range from Strat-like snappy to more glassy, atmospheric sounds. As a guitarist, Aswani comes from the Greg Howe / Brett Garsed school of rock-meets-fusion. He has the touch and feel a rock player, yet has no trouble navigating through changes while dropping in cool intervallic and outside ideas. He also has a highly developed hybrid-picking technique that allows him to execute complex legato runs that are smooth yet punchy. Sonically Speaking opens with “Stephanie” - a light, airy ballad that features Banerlee’s Tabla as the sole percussion. This tune is a great example of Aswani’s aforementioned production skills; multiple clean guitar tracks are used to give the piece a big, lush sound. Things get heavier with “Drive” which has Aswani sharing the spotlight with Aussie guitarist Brett Garsed on the cool Phrygian-based solo section. Garsed is great as always, peeling off plenty of his signature spidery legato lines. Aswani takes a more aggressive approach in his solo by adding some wild tapped licks and whammy accents. This tune also has one of the best riffs on the album, and features a nice bass break from Rhonda Smith. “Drive” is followed by one of the most interesting tracks on the album - the prog-like “Make It 14.” With its eastern-tinged melody and rapid mood shifts, this is one of the most exotic tunes on the disc. In his solo, Aswani plays some great dynamic phrases over the changes. This song ends with a wah-wah based rhythm part that is one of the coolest grooves on the record. “11 Miles” is a bluesy power ballad of sorts with a nice odd meter A section. Aswani’s solo on this one is loaded with smooth sixteenth note lines. Other ballads on the disc include “Pardon Me” - which prominently features the Tabla, and includes some of Aswani’s fastest runs, and “Rain” - another song (like “Stephanie”) where all of the percussion is handled by the Tabla. This piece also has some great harmony and acoustic guitar parts. Aswani is definitely at his jazziest on this track, both with his lines and his tone. The heaviest songs on the album are “5 am” and “Narrow Path.” On “5 am,” the core tune features hard distorted riffs over a backdrop of Police-esque clean chord stabs. Aswani uncorks a killer solo on this one over a cool “fusiony” chord progression. “Narrow Path” is Aswani’s most “metallic” song on the disc - this tune is dripping with middle eastern vibes in its heavy riffs and melody. “Shades of Gray” is probably Sonically Speaking’s most commercial-sounding track. The song has a great singing melody, and a pair of cool solos from Aswani (first with a clean tone during the main solo section - a nice change of pace - then distorted for the outro). The album closes with “Pure at Heart” which features Rob Caggiano from Anthrax contributing a wicked solo and some melody lines. Caggiano’s wild aggression provides a nice counter to Aswani’s more even-keeled approach. The song - and the album - fittingly ends with the Tabla right out front. With Sonically Speaking, Aswani has crafted a deep album that subtly harkens back to his Indian roots, while showing off his considerable playing, writing, and producing chops. The album is loaded with great examples of his cutting edge technique, and fine contributions from his well chosen supporting lineup. Highly recommended. © Rich Murray © 2004 - 2012 Rich Murray. Great album of jazz rock/fusion with Indian elements from L.A. based guitar maestro Prashant Aswani. Over the last few years Prashant has guested on many albums including the Great Greg Howe’s "Ascend" and "Hyperacuity. “Sonically Speaking” features Rhonda Smith (Jeff Beck, Prince) on bass, Joey Heredia (Stevie Wonder, Steve, Lukather, Tribal Tech, Scott Henderson) on drums, and guitarists Brett Garsed and Rob Caggiano who play some some killer guest solos. Prashant Aswani may be one of the greatest guitarists you have never heard! The guy is phenomenal and really should be better known. He is in the same league as guitarists like Jeff Beck, Greg Howe, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Steve Morse, and many more. This album is HR by A.O.O.F.C. SHORT BIO

Prashant Aswani was captivated by music at a young age. He began taking tabla lessons at the age of 8 years old, which helped him develop a strong sense of rhythm. By the time he was a teenager, his interests had migrated toward the guitar, and he had begun lessons. In his thirteenth year, he played in an area talent show, and dazzled his hometown audience with his original composition. Later, he was selected to play in his high school’s jazz ensemble, which he would stay in throughout his high school career. From high school, Aswani crossed the country to go to Boston’s distinguished Berklee College of Music. In his sophomore year, he was honored by the faculty at Berklee by being selected to play at the infamous “Guitar Night,” as one of seven of the best guitarists in the school. Later, he won the highly competitive Bay Area’s Best Guitarist competition. In 1995, he met Greg Howe and began taking lessons from him. In 1998 and 1999, Prashant released his debut album in Europe and Japan, entitled Revelation. Produced by Greg Howe, the album received critical acclaim by guitarists and jazz fusionists everywhere. In the summer of 2000, he released another Howe-produced independent effort, entitled Duality. Prashant has also guitar duty with Howe on Howe’s latest released, Hyper Acuity, as well as some previous releases. Prashant keeps busy performing at guitar seminars, as well as endorsing products and giving interviews with guitar magazines worldwide. © http://www.xtrememusician.com/info/artists/profiles/6566.html
