Scott Henderson & Tribal Tech

Scott Henderson & Tribal Tech - Reality Check - 1995 Agat

This band is stellar period. This album is stellar period. There's an amazing fusion tune "Foreign affairs" that alone is worth the price. The fantastic musicianship of this combo is quite easy to understand from the exact beginning. The short Stella by starlight rendition is behind words, the harmonization conventional but courageous, consistent but free, and moreover short. In a couple of minutes there is a true story, it's complete. It's a jewel. You don't have to blow a hundred choruses to explain a tune, to say the thing the tune wants you to say. Bird was the epitome of this approach. A short solo, but beyond words, technical challenging, lyrical unreachable and complete in itself. A couple of choruses maximum, and if you are a master player that's it. I don't like the Coltrane approach to endless improvisation. It's really boring in my opinion !!! Talkin' about this album the rest of the music is heavy fusion played at incredible level. I love the songs, I love the album, I love a lot of solos from all the guys. I don't like Scott Henderson's solo work when he tries to play too bluesy on difficult chord changes. I am a Jazz guitarist myself; I would prefer a more tonal approach, less pentatonic and guitaristic and more musical, more oriented to chord meanings. But that's oly my taste of course. He is an amazing player obviously, a scientist, he could do whatever he wants, it is simply his choice to play like that, and there's nothing wrong with it. I prefer more straight ahead solos... that's all. In the end this is a great album, probably their best. A great band. In my opinion best band name for a modern futuristic band, strongly rooted in blues, jazz, fusion tradition but with a musical guru approach. Fantastic. Tribal Tech is a virtuoso progressive jazz fusion band, formed in 1984 by Floridian guitarist Scott Henderson and bass player Gary Willis. In 1991, Scott was named by Guitar World as the #1 Jazz Guitarist, and in January 1992, he was named #1 Jazz Guitarist in Guitar Player’s Annual Reader’s Poll. His first solo blues album “Dog Party”, a welcome retreat to his musical roots, won best blues album of 1994 in Guitar Player. The second blues album for Mesa/Bluemoon Records “Tore Down House” was released in April 97 and paired Scott Henderson with the legendary vocalist Thelma Houston. That album received four star reviews in Jazz Times, Guitar Player, Guitar, Guitar Shop, and L.A Jazz Scene Magazines. Scott Henderson has been quoted as saying that he is a "blues player at heart" and much of his music is based on blues, jazz, and rock influences. His early years were influenced by rock, blues, funk and soul, and his later jazz influences included artists like John Coltrane and Miles Davis. From 1993 onwards Tribal Tech included Scott Kinsey on keyboards and Kirk Covington on drums. From 1985 to 2000 the band released nine albums fusing elements of blues, jazz, and rock. Tribal Tech disbanded after releasing their "Rocket Science" album in 2000, but got together in 2010 to record their "X" album released in 2012. All band members are acclaimed musicians in the jazz rock/fusion world and all their albums are worth checking out. “Reality Check” is HR by A.O.O.F.C. I like this a lot. Terje Rypdal meets Weather Report. Thanks, Paul!

Hi, Freg. You got it in two! Thanks a million, & TTU soon...Paul

Terje is one of my all-time favourite guitarists. The critic Michael Watts once called him "the thinking man's Mike Oldfield" LOL. (I like Mike Oldfield, too, though...).

Hi,Freg. Who's Michael Watts? I like Mike Oldfield also, but I'm struggling to understand Mr.Watts' comparison! I do like Charlie Watts, though. He talks a lot of logic! (lol). Have you ever read the review of Steely Dan's "Aja" album by Ken Emerson @ http://granatino.com/sdresource/16fool.htm If you're ever feeling down, read it for a laugh! I don't know where Mr.Emerson is now, but presumably he crawled into a very deep hole somewhere in Outer Mongolia after "Aja" took off! (lol)TVM & TTU soon...Paul

Watts wrote for Melody Maker in the 70's and his comment came from his review of Terje Rypdal's "After The Rain" LP -- and on the strength of that review i bought the LP and it began a lifelong love affair with Terje's playing.

Re: the review of "Aja," LOL, how can someone miss the point so completely...?

Hi,Freg. I never bought Melody Maker, but I have every copy of Sounds ever printed. I often bought albums on the strength of reviews in Sounds, and they were always spot on. I still play the old LP's when I'm in "vacant or in pensive mood" which is most of the time! (lol). As for Mr.Emerson...He won the dick of the year award in 1978! TTU soon...Paul
